BEV surge drives Europe’s biggest car sales jump since 2023

European new-car registrations rose 13% in June to 1.41 million units, the steepest year-on-year gain since October 2023, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were largely responsible for the boost, soaring 51% and bringing the total market share of vehicles that can be plugged in to around a third (33.8%).

France and Germany, the EU’s two largest BEV markets, accounted for most of the rise after fresh subsidy programmes took effect. However, the rise cannot be wholly attributed to incentives, as every European market posted higher BEV sales bar Poland. Persistently high fuel prices, largely a result of the US-Israeli war on Iran, have kept pressure on internal combustion engine (ICE) demand.

The combined 33.8% milestone is arguably quite a large structural milestone, comfortably nudging past the 28% combined share of gasoline and diesel. A year ago, these numbers were practically the opposite: combined ICE sales sat at 36.8% against 26.1% for plug-in vehicles.

BEVs alone accounted for 23.6% market share, up 16.7% YoY; plug-in hybrids eked out 10.1% in June 2026, up from 9.4%. Meanwhile, regular hybrids—still the most popular configuration by far—held 35.2%, meaning electrified models of every kind now account for 68.9% of sales.

Jaecoo 7

Jaecoo J7 has emerged as the UK’s best-selling car overall

Taken as a whole H1 2026 tells a similar story, albeit at a steadier pace. EU registrations rose 5.7% year-to-date, with BEV share reaching 20.7% versus 15.6% a year ago, and hybrids remained the single most popular choice at 37.3%. Gasoline and diesel ICE combined secured a 29.7% share, down from 37.8% a year ago. France and Spain posted the steepest declines in gasoline car sales: 34.2% and 18.5% respectively.

It should be of little surprise that Chinese brands are capturing a disproportionate share of the growth in such conditions. BYD and MG, the SAIC-owned British marque, each grew their UK registrations by more than a third, lifting their combined European share to 5.4%, up from 3.4% last year. Data cited by Reuters also shows BYD, Chery and Leapmotor all now selling nearly three to six times their June 2025 volumes. Chery’s Jaecoo 7 established itself as the UK’s best-selling car back in March.

That growth is forcing legacy automakers to cut their prices and expand incentives just to maintain their position. Rapid expansion is now accelerating the squeeze rather than easing it: BYD is building a plant in Hungary, Ford has just entered a joint manufacturing agreement with Geely for Spain, and Stellantis has opened its European factories to Leapmotor and Dongfeng. Both BYD and Xpeng are also in negotiations with Stellantis and Volkswagen, respectively, about acquiring brownfield sites.

Registration gains at Volkswagen, Stellantis and Renault, up between 3.6% and 7.3% in June, sit awkwardly against the scale of restructuring under way. Volkswagen is weighing a further 50,000 job cuts on top of 50,000 already flagged, the closure of up to four German plants and halving its 150-model lineup, with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Renault all pursuing deeper efficiencies of their own.

None of this makes June’s number a false signal, but it is the wrong signal to read as recovery. The growth is concentrated in exactly the segments—BEV incentives and Chinese brands—that are also the source of legacy OEMs’ cost pressure. Notably, the month which produced the best European registration figures since 2023 is the same in which Volkswagen’s restructuring case became more difficult to argue against, not easier.
