Five AI, a Bosch subsidiary based in Cambridge, has secured UK Government funding through the CAM Pathfinder programme to develop a photorealistic simulation technology for autonomous vehicle (AV) testing. The Five AI simulation tool uses Gaussian scene reconstruction to convert real-world images into photorealistic 3D environments, combined with diffusion-based AI to generate variations in lighting, weather and other scene conditions.

The technology will allow AV developers to test across a far wider range of scenarios than could be collected in the real world, supporting Level 2++, Level 3 and ultimately Level 4 autonomous driving development. Five AI has been developing simulation software for automotive manufacturers since 2015.

The tool will integrate with other Bosch Mobility simulation products to create a comprehensive AV testing platform. CAM Pathfinder is backed by up to £150 million (US$200 million) of UK Government funding through 2030, delivered in partnership with Zenzic and Innovate UK.

Dave Buffey, Head of Bosch Mobility UK, said the software would address complex challenges that automotive partners face in integrating autonomous driving technology. He described it as one of the biggest challenges in today’s automotive industry, with Five AI’s team expected to play a central role.
