BYD brings FLASH Charging to the UK with Denza Z9 GT
BYD has demonstrated FLASH Charging for the first time in the UK at its Uxbridge headquarters, using the Denza Z9 GT, rated at 372 miles, to show 223 miles added in five minutes. Using Blade Battery 2.0, the system delivers up to 1,500kW through a single connector and charges from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

A 20-97% charge at -30°C takes 12 minutes, with on-site battery storage supplying the charging energy, meaning FLASH Charging requires no greater grid capacity than existing slower chargers. BYD plans to install 300 FLASH Charging units at Denza stores and other UK locations by the end of 2026.
In a statement, Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, said: “The first demonstration of FLASH Charging in the UK is another significant landmark for the technology. FLASH Charging’s ability to make our second generation Blade Battery ready in five minutes, full in nine minutes, and to add just three minutes in cold weather sets a new standard for the future of premium mobility. Our Denza brand is driven by technology that inspires, and witnessing FLASH Charging today, as shown by the Z9 GT, is truly inspirational.”
Why this matters:
•The Denza brand is doing specific work here.BYD is not leading the UK FLASH Charging debut with a mainstream BYD-badged vehicle; it is using the premium Denza Z9 GT. That positioning is deliberate: establishing ultra-fast charging credentials through a premium product first allows BYD to build aspirational associations around the technology before it cascades to higher-volume, more price-sensitive models. It mirrors the halo product strategy that has worked for other technology-led automotive entrants, and it gives Denza a reason to exist in European markets beyond being a rebadged BYD.
•The on-site battery storage architecture is the detail that changes the infrastructure calculus. Most ultra-fast charging networks require expensive grid connection upgrades that add years and significant capital to deployment timelines. BYD’s FLASH Charging system draws from on-site BESS that charges gradually at off-peak rates and discharges in high-power bursts, meaning the 1,500kW output does not require a 1,500kW grid connection. That decoupling from grid upgrade requirements is what makes 3,000 European stations by end-2027 a plausible target rather than an aspirational one, and it is the same logic underpinning the mobile energy storage demand that Xos is serving for AV fleet operators.
•Five minutes to 70% genuinely changes the refuelling behaviour comparison. The psychological barrier of charging time relative to petrol refuelling has been a persistent drag on EV adoption among hesitant buyers. At five minutes for a meaningful usable charge and nine minutes for a near-full charge in ambient conditions, FLASH Charging narrows that gap to the point where it becomes difficult to sustain as a primary objection. The cold weather performance (only three additional minutes at -30°C) addresses the secondary anxiety that fast charging degrades in the conditions where range anxiety is already highest
