Einride to buy Flipturn, build largest US HDV charging net
Einride has agreed to acquire charging and energy software specialist Flipturn in a deal valued at US$38.4m, adding more than 250 megawatts of managed charging capacity to its portfolio and more than doubling its existing energy under management. The Swedish truckmaker says the combined business will create North America’s largest heavy-duty electric truck charging ecosystem and pave the way for infrastructure deployment at larger scales than previously possible.
Flipturn’s software predicts charging times, optimises power delivery, manages driver access and payments, and adapts to each fleet’s specific vehicle and battery behaviour over time, while also targeting lower grid costs through better management of time-of-use tariffs and peak demand charges. Chief Executive Roozbeh Charli said the acquisition would make Einride “the first company in the industry with a fully vertically integrated electric freight technology stack.” In practice, this means combining autonomous freight operations, proprietary in-house-designed trucks, AI-driven route optimisation and now charging infrastructure under a single platform.
The deal aims to remove what has consistently been cited as the biggest practical obstacle to fleet electrification at scale: dependency on third-party charging networks which fleets have had to manage separately from their own operations. Of course, Einride is far from alone in seeking to correct this; Tesla is also in the process of deploying 1.2 megawatt chargers to support its Semi electric truck.
There are practical advantages to operating one’s own charging network. Here, aggregating Flipturn’s existing 250 megawatts of charging demand could hand Einride some real negotiating leverage over third-party charging providers. If it can grow its combined customer base going forward, this advantage should compound.
The transaction, expected to close before July’s end pending regulatory approval, will be paid in Einride’s US depositary shares, with the exact share count based on Einride’s volume-weighted average price since its 10 June Nasdaq debut, plus additional earnout shares tied to unspecified performance milestones. Flipturn’s existing team and platform will continue operating as-is, according to company Co-Founder and Chief Executive Katie Siegel.
What the announcement does not offer is any indication of how quickly the completion of this platform translates into market share. There are no named target cities, no disclosed customer commitments beyond Flipturn’s existing Fortune 500 and fleet-operator base, and no deployment timeline for the combined charging network beyond a general ambition to scale across North America.
That gap matters because vertical integration is only a competitive advantage once it is deployed at volume, and a strategically sound acquisition could still stall if Einride cannot translate 250 megawatts of existing capacity into new charging sites and fleets contract faster than point-solution rivals can respond. The clearest test of whether this deal delivers what Einride is claiming will be how quickly concrete deployment numbers, rather than platform description, start appearing in its next few quarterly updates.
