The Leapmotor A05 has launched in China as a compact battery electric hatchback, and has already been given a global designation, B03. The announcement was distributed through Stellantis, the group’s international distribution partner, which is itself a signal about where the car is going.

Assigning an export name at a domestic launch is deliberate. It indicates the model was developed for markets beyond China from the outset rather than being adapted afterwards, which shortens the lead time between a Chinese launch and a European one.

The specification suits European use. Leapmotor claims up to 510km on the WLTC cycle, subject to homologation, from a car measuring 4,175mm long on a 2,605mm wheelbase, placing it against the Renault 5 rather than anything larger.

That creates an awkward question for Stellantis. A B03 in Europe would sit directly against the group’s own Citroën e-C3 and Fiat Grande Panda, so pricing and market selection will matter rather more than the specification does.

No price, launch date or European timing was given. Stellantis has previously assembled Leapmotor models at European plants to limit exposure to EU tariffs on China-built battery electric vehicles, and the B03 would follow the same logic.
