Nio CEO warns China car sales could drop by a fifth in 2026

Nio Chief Executive William Li made a gloomy forecast at the China Auto Chongqing Summit on 13 June, positing that Chinese auto retail sales could decline 15-20% in 2026. The total for 2025 was 23.74 million units, meaning he predicts this year's total might be between 18.99 million and 20.18 million.
