SMP forms sensor manufacturing joint venture in Thailand
Standard Motor Products (SMP) has entered a 50/50 joint venture (JV) with Techstrong Holdings Limited to manufacture automotive sensors in Thailand, giving the US parts supplier direct control over development, quality and delivery in a core product segment. The deal also reduces SMP’s dependence on China by establishing manufacturing capacity in a geographically separate, cost-competitive region.
The new entity, Techstrong Electronics (Thailand) Company Limited, will produce sensors across key categories in which SMP has previously relied on third-party suppliers. A 50% stake in an established operation gives SMP immediate production scale rather than requiring it to build capacity from the ground up.

Thailand’s position provides both geographical separation from Chinese production and competitive manufacturing costs—a combination that directly addresses the supply chain resilience priorities SMP has set out as central to its strategy. The JV structure also gives SMP access to an operational facility, rather than the expense and timelines of a greenfield investment.
In a statement, Hap Acee, Vice-President of Asian Operations for SMP, said: “This joint venture represents an important step forward in our commitment to our customers. By investing in manufacturing and deepening our partnership with Techstrong, we are strengthening our ability to deliver the quality, coverage and value that our customers expect from SMP.”
Why this matters:
- Thailand as the location is a supply chain diversification signal, not just a cost decision.Reducing China reliance while maintaining regional manufacturing competitiveness is the explicit rationale—a pattern now visible across multiple automotive component categories as suppliers respond to tariff exposure and geopolitical risk by redistributing production across Southeast Asia.
- A 50/50 structure with an established local supplier accelerates capability without greenfield risk.SMP gains immediate sensor manufacturing capacity and supply chain control rather than building from scratch, while Techstrong gains a strategic partner with global distribution reach—a faster route to scale for both parties than organic expansion would allow.
