Workhorse Group has said it will enter the mobile AI data centre category, developing a containerised, compute-ready product at its Union City plant in Indiana. The electric truck manufacturer is targeting 2027 for initial production, the same window it has set for its modular chassis and cab chassis programmes.

The rationale is financial rather than technological. Chief Executive Scott Griffith said in a statement that the line should generate revenue and cash flow while helping to bring down the production costs of the company’s electric trucks for commercial fleet customers.

That framing matters more than the product does. Union City was built for volumes the medium-duty truck programme has yet to reach, and high-mix, low-volume computing hardware spreads its fixed costs across a second business. Grand View Research values the containerised data centre market at US$41bn by 2031.

The engineering carries over more readily than the category suggests. Power electronics, thermal management, ruggedised enclosures and vibration isolation all apply to containerised computing, and Workhorse intends to sell through data centre developers rather than build its own customer-facing operation.

The risk sits in the calendar. Both product lines are due to reach production in late 2027 from the same engineering base, and a company of this size has limited room to run two launches at once. Further detail is expected on the second-quarter earnings call on 13 August 2026.
