Xiaomi has confirmed Sky Nomad, sold in China as Xiaomi Pengcheng, as a new extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) product series rather than the standalone sub-brand many had expected, positioning it as a brand new lineup to sit alongside the SU7 and YU7. The first model—internally codenamed Kunlun N3 and due to launch in 2027 as the N90—is a full-size SUV built on an entirely new platform Xiaomi calls the Kunlun architecture.

The move effectively breaks Xiaomi away from its 2024 starting point as a pure-play electric vehicle (EV) brand. A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine will act solely as a generator for the N90, feeding an approximately 70 kWh battery pack for 400-500 km of pure-electric range and more than 1,500 km combined range. Chief Executive Lei Jun has framed this approach as targeting a wholly separate consumer base than the more aficionado-oriented SU7 and YU7 product lines.

The N90 measures more than 5.3 m long on a 3.1 m wheelbase, with multiple distinct features: rotating front seats, a sliding centre console that converts into a bar counter, and a modular cabin Xiaomi says can become a studio, a café, a meeting room or a family playground when parked. Five- and seven-seat layouts are planned, with the latter including a built-in rooftop tent aimed at China’s outdoor camping boom. 

Pricing is expected to start at around CN¥200,000 (US$29,400), which would put the N90 directly beneath its most immediate domestic competition: the Li Auto L9 and Huawei-backed Aito M9. These two brands cumulatively accounted for seven of China’s ten best-selling SUV EREVs in 2025. The battery pack is larger than many full EVs on sale today, including Tesla’s base Model Y in China—which, incidentally, costs CN¥263,500.

Using EREV as a hedge may prove timely given dynamics within China’s intensely competitive car market. Xiaomi delivered only 185,055 vehicles in the first half of 2026, roughly a third of its 550,000-unit target for the year, meaning that deliveries in the second half will effectively need to double in order to meet targets. Of course, the N90 will not reach consumers until 2027, making it a moot point for this year—the automaker will instead lean on the refreshed SU7 to boost sales.

The N90 could also prove a boon for Xiaomi’s brewing expansion plans; the automaker has been laying groundwork for a European entry since opening an EV research and design centre in Munich and registering its SU7 Ultra as a test vehicle on European roads, with a full market launch slated for 2027. Conventional wisdom would suggest EU regulatory bias will push pure electrics such as the YU7 GT and SU7 to lead that launch.

Local incentives and tax subsidies to adopt EVs could still be cancelled out by the EU’s countervailing tariffs aimed specifically at BEVs, leaving plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and EREVs like the N90 outside their scope entirely. This is the same regulatory gap that has already accelerated BYD’s push into PHEV exports across the continent. European consumers have already proven highly receptive to partially-electrified options: PHEVs climbed 33% year-over-year during Q1 2026, and hybrids grew 10.4%.

The decision to keep Sky Nomad under the Xiaomi banner brand rather than spinning it off as a standalone marque suggests the automaker is confident it can run two distinct identities—driver-focused BEVs and family-oriented EREVs—without diluting either. Its more immediate test, though, is domestic: whether a car this large and this late to a segment two rivals already dominate can generate the volume Xiaomi needs from a standing start in the second half of the year.
