Zoox unveils updated robotaxi ahead of mass production

Zoox has unveiled a refreshed iteration of its purpose-built robotaxi with cabin and exterior updates informed by feedback from 500,000 riders, as the firm prepares for large-scale production at its Hayward, California facility. The vehicle is production-intent, with a weekly output target of up to 100 units subject to regulatory approval.

The carriage-style, face-to-face cabin layout is retained, updated with monochrome aloe green seating and stone-grey flooring and trim. Seat padding and ergonomic curves have been added to seats and headrests, the touchscreen is more vivid, cupholders are larger and the charging pad gains fluting for device stability.

Exterior changes focus on legibility, with bidirectional reflectors refined and relocated for better visibility, and the door interface gaining a new speaker, microphone and expanded two-way audio for riders, Zoox Support and first responders. The updated robotaxi will join Zoox’s fleet as vehicles come off the Hayward production line, with Las Vegas riders first to access the model later in 2026.

In a statement, Chris Stoffel, Director of Robot Industrial Design and Studio Engineering at Zoox, said: “The updates we’ve made to this iteration of our purpose-built robotaxi continue to further distinguish the Zoox experience from anything else available today. The simplicity of the elevated interior design does not demand a rider’s attention like so many of the features found in today’s passenger cars. Instead, riders can relax and enjoy the space as they are transported throughout the city.”

Why this matters:

  • Moving to large-scale production is the threshold Zoox has not previously crossed.Half a million riders and years of testing have been preparatory; a serial production facility ramping to 100 vehicles a week represents a qualitatively different phase—one where operational and supply chain execution become the defining challenges rather than technology validation.
  • The purpose-built approach is vindicated or disproven at scale, not in testing.Designing out the driver entirely creates a fundamentally different cabin, but it also means there is no fallback to a conventional vehicle platform if production or regulatory issues arise—the next 12 months will test whether the blank-sheet philosophy holds up under commercial pressure.
  • Regulatory approval remains the critical variable. The 100-vehicles-a-week production rate is qualified by that caveat, and given the NHTSA brake pedal rulemaking announced separately, Zoox’s timeline is partly dependent on federal rule changes completing before its fleet is ready to deploy at scale.
