BYD passes its 100,000 UK sales milestone in three years
BYD has passed its 100,000 UK sales milestone, just over three years after its March 2023 launch with the Atto 3. The New Energy Vehicle manufacturer’s range has since grown from one model to 10, spanning fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
More than a third of those registrations, 37,995 vehicles, came in the first half of 2026 alone, as BYD’s UK retail network expanded from five sites to 143. Recent additions include the Dolphin Surf compact hatchback, the 530PS Sealion 7 SUV-coupe and a growing line of DM-i plug-in hybrids led by the Seal U.

Bono Ge, Country Manager for BYD UK, said the milestone reflected trust built with 100,000 owners and their families, and pointed to continued investment in the dealer network. He said BYD plans to expand further with the Dolphin G, Shark and Ti 7 models, alongside Denza-branded vehicles including the Z, D9, Bao 5 and Z9 GT.
Ge also pointed to new charging technology BYD is bringing to the UK to support faster electric vehicle top-ups. The milestone underscores how quickly BYD has scaled in a market where established brands have historically taken decades to reach similar registration numbers.
Why this matters:
- 100,000 UK registrations in three years is a genuinely fast ramp.Starting from zero in March 2023 and reaching that milestone—with over a third coming in H1 2026 alone—puts BYD’s UK trajectory ahead of most established brands’ equivalent growth phases and demonstrates that Chinese EV hesitancy among British buyers is eroding faster than sceptics predicted.
- PHEVs have been central to the volume story, not just BEVs.The DM-i plug-in hybrid range expanding to four models reflects a deliberate hedge against the charging infrastructure gaps and EV range anxiety that still limit pure electric appeal in the UK—and means BYD’s tariff-free PHEV exports are doing meaningful commercial work that the headline EV narrative tends to obscure.
- Volume leadership and sales leadership are not the same thing.Despite BYD’s cumulative milestone, it was Chery’s Jaecoo 7—not a BYD model—that became the UK’s best-selling car in March 2026, underlining that Chinese brands are competing against each other as much as against European incumbents, and that BYD’s scale advantage does not automatically translate into segment dominance.
