Camel Group, the Chinese battery manufacturer listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, has been selected for a pre-development project with an unnamed major European automaker for its 12V sodium-ion battery technology. The Camel Group sodium-ion selection brings its technology into the OEM’s development and validation process for automotive low-voltage battery systems.

Sodium-ion batteries are being explored for automotive low-voltage use due to their resource availability, low-temperature performance and cycle-life characteristics. Camel Group has completed cylindrical sodium-ion battery sample engineering development and established small-batch production, with a portfolio spanning lead-acid, EFB, AGM and 12V lithium-ion batteries.

Camel Group leads the proposal for an IEC international standard covering 12V sodium-ion batteries for automotive start-stop applications, unanimously approved by IEC Technical Committee 21 and now in the formal international standardisation process. The European OEM project provides further validation of Camel Group’s technology under European automotive requirements.

The project follows Camel Group’s existing 12V lithium-ion battery supply to European automakers and reflects growing interest in sodium-ion technology as manufacturers adapt to evolving vehicle electrical architectures and decarbonisation requirements. Camel Group plans to continue advancing sodium-ion technology in collaboration with automakers in China and overseas.
