General Motors has confirmed a 2028 launch for eyes-off automated driving, beginning with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, combining the production scale of Super Cruise with Cruise’s autonomous driving expertise. A domain-by-domain validation strategy draws on production vehicle telemetry, a high-precision development fleet, and high-fidelity synthetic environments for rare edge cases.

John Kaychi, Senior Group Product Manager for Automated Driving at GM, leads the product team working on eyes-off driving. He identifies retail as the third wave of autonomous vehicle industry development, following ridesharing and robotaxi services, and argues it represents the largest scale test of the technology.

GM is combining two established foundations for the 2028 launch: Super Cruise’s multi-million-mile production experience in scaling driver assistance technology and Cruise’s AI development and complex testing expertise. Together they provide the validation base for a domain-by-domain commercial rollout.

Validation draws on three data streams: production vehicle fleet telemetry, a dedicated high-precision development fleet, and synthetic environments built to cover rare edge cases. Retail data is collected with customer privacy safeguards, focused on operational domains targeting the highest customer value.

In a statement, Kaychi said: “You can have the best technology in the world. But if customers don’t trust it, it won’t stick.”
