Renault has begun rolling out Google’s Gemini AI assistant to vehicles fitted with its openR link multimedia system, in a gradual over-the-air deployment that began on 15 June 2026. The opt-in upgrade replaces Google Assistant at no extra cost across Renault’s European range and select international markets.

Gemini offers contextual conversation handling, managing complex multi-step requests without requiring memorised command phrases. Supported functions include direct vehicle control covering air conditioning, navigation, radio and settings, as well as access to live EV range data for route planning. These capabilities extend beyond what is available through Android Auto phone replication, placing intelligence inside the vehicle rather than deferring to the user’s phone.

The deployment reaches vehicles already on the road: openR link has been available since its 2022 launch on the Mégane E-Tech electric, and the Gemini upgrade extends backward across the full compatible fleet. A forthcoming Gemini Live mode will add free-flowing conversation, mid-sentence interruption, sequential requests without re-triggering the wake phrase, and mid-conversation language switching.

At launch the rollout supports 13 languages: English, French, German, Swedish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian and Turkish, with further languages planned. Designed as a scalable platform, the system receives continuous upgrades automatically, with no dealer visit required.
