Mercedes-Benz eEconic enters service with Stuttgart fleet
Mercedes-Benz Trucks has delivered the first five battery-electric eEconic refuse collection vehicles to Abfallwirtschaft Stuttgart (AWS), the city’s municipal waste management service, with a further five to follow. The handover marked the inauguration of AWS’s new Stuttgart-Wangen operating site, built specifically for battery-electric fleet operation.
Each e-truck is equipped with a FAUN Variopress rear loader with a 21 m³ capacity and a FAUN Skylift lifting system. The AWS site features nine overhead truck charging units, two fast-charging points, and a rooftop photovoltaic system described as among the largest on a municipal building in the city.

In a statement, Christian Wilz, Chief Executive, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Germany, said: “With the eEconic, we are bringing locally CO₂e-free and exceptionally low-noise waste collection vehicles onto the road—a clear advantage in urban environments like Stuttgart. At the same time, the handover of these ten vehicles marks an important joint milestone with Abfallwirtschaft Stuttgart. It stands for our long-standing, trusting partnership and our shared responsibility to develop solutions for the circular economy, thereby making a tangible contribution to quality of life in our cities.”
AWS has also procured ten diesel-powered Econic trucks alongside the electric fleet. The service operates approximately 120 waste collection vehicles as part of a total fleet of around 1,100.
