Mercedes reportedly halts CLA L output amid China sales slide

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly paused production of the electric CLA L at its Beijing Benz Automotive (BBAC) joint venture in China, according to German industry outlet mb passion, though the company has yet to confirm the move or give a reason for the pause. Industry sources cited by the outlet, however, point to disappointing sales as the likely cause, with the China-exclusive model variant selling only 627 units across the first half of 2026.

Monthly registration figures tell a fairly grim story: 35 units in January, 21 in February, a brief spike to 358 in March, then a fall to 52 in April, 161 in May, and zero registrations in June. It remains unclear whether the absence of June registrations reflects the reported production halt directly, or separate factors such as inventory or delivery timing. Either way, the model is falling significantly short of the expectations Mercedes-Benz placed on it to revive sagging China sales.

The CLA L is a long-wheelbase version of Mercedes’ new battery-electric CLA, developed exclusively for the Chinese market and unveiled in Beijing in November 2025. The model is adapted to cater specifically to the strong local preference for stretched sedans. At 4.76 m, it is a modest four centimetres longer than its European counterpart, and its 89 kWh battery delivers a CLTC range of up to 866 km, among the longest available in China. The battery is aided by an efficient 200 kW rear motor and an 800-volt architecture capable of adding 370 km of range in a ten-minute charge.

Unfortunately, none of that specification advantage appears to have mattered a great deal. The car’s collapse illustrates a pattern that now extends well beyond one model: Chinese buyers increasingly choose based on software, ecosystem integration and—crucially—sticker price, rather than battery range or charging speed. Across all of these metrics, domestic brands such as BYD, Nio and Xiaomi have built a decisive edge that hardware specifications alone cannot offset.

Despite high expectations, the CLA C has been a commercial flop

The CLA L’s struggles sit inside a much larger decline for Mercedes in China, historically its most profitable single market. Sales in the country fell by 19% in 2025 to roughly 575,000 units, then worsened further in 2026, down 27% in the first quarter and 30% in the second, when deliveries slipped below 100,000 units. This pulled volumes back to levels last seen seven to eight years ago, and well below the 774,000-unit peak reached in 2020.

Much of that erosion traces to buyers in the CN¥300,000-500,000 (US$44,300-73,900) bracket defecting from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi to domestic brands. Mercedes has responded by scaling back its own medium-term China sales target to 500,000-600,000 vehicles annually, an explicit acceptance—increasingly common among the global cohort—of a smaller, more sustainable Chinese footprint rather than a fight to defend former volumes.

The one segment still holding firm is the very top of the market, where the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and G-Class continue to sell well at prices exceeding CN¥1m. Still, the automaker is trying to match market trends by shifting more of its software and research authority to Beijing under an “in China, for China” approach. To this end, it is partnering with local tech firms on smart cockpits and driver assistance, while betting its new MB.EA and MMA platforms, underpinning the CLA and forthcoming C-Class and GLC variants, can close the technology gap that specification sheets alone have failed to bridge.

Whether that localisation is substantial enough to avoid another product landing like the CLA L—competitive on paper but ignored in the showroom—remains uncertain.
