Mitsubishi to re-enter US pickup segment through Nissan tie-up

Mitsubishi Motors has updated its Momentum 2030 business plan for the US market, confirming an intent to re-enter the pick-up truck segment through a collaboration with Nissan. The company also revealed an expanded near-term product roadmap at a confidential dealer meeting, with the all-new Eclipse Sportback battery-electric SUV due to launch this autumn and a rugged off-road-focused Outlander variant targeted for Q1 2027.

The US lineup will expand from four models today to six by 2027, encompassing the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Eclipse Sportback EV, Outlander, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, and the new Outlander variant, whose name has not yet been announced. The pickup truck would represent a further addition beyond that six-model count, though no timeline has been confirmed. The broader strategy is centred on adventure-oriented and off-road-capable vehicles as Mitsubishi looks to build relevance in segments where US customer demand is growing.

Separately, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in Japan announced the return of the Pajero nameplate globally. No decision has been made on a US introduction, though the company acknowledged the model’s significance in reconnecting the brand with one of its most recognised nameplates internationally.

Momentum 2030 is structured around four pillars: electrification, product renewal and expansion, retail model modernisation, and network growth. Mitsubishi Motors North America operates through approximately 300 US dealer partners. “This is the most comprehensive growth plan we have ever undertaken in the region,” said Mark Chaffin, president and chief executive of Mitsubishi Motors North America.

Why this matters:

  • Re-entering pick-up trucks through Nissan rather than in-house development limits Mitsubishi’s capital exposure.Leveraging an existing alliance partner’s platform lets Mitsubishi compete in a segment it previously exited without bearing the full engineering and tooling cost of a standalone pickup programme.
  • Doubling the lineup from four to six models in under two years is an aggressive pace for a brand rebuilding market presence. The speed suggests Mitsubishi is prioritising visible momentum and dealer confidence over the more cautious, phased rollout a smaller automaker might otherwise choose when re-establishing itself in a competitive market.
