Nio has opened a new 880m² research and development (R&D) centre in Witney, Oxfordshire, consolidating its UK engineering operation and marking a decade of the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s presence in the county. The new site at Book End brings together more than 40 engineers formerly based at Begbroke Science Park and Bicester Motion.

The facility comprises a dedicated computer aided engineering (CAE) workspace and vehicle laboratory. Its team’s activities span CAE, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), simulation, safety, Euro NCAP assessments, and noise, vibration and harshness testing across Nio’s global vehicle programmes, from the EP9 electric supercar to the ET9 executive flagship and the firefly compact EV.

The UK team represents Nio Europe on AI regulatory matters through the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The inauguration coincides with Nio producing its one millionth vehicle earlier this year.

• R&D investment and commercial retrenchment are running in parallel.Nio is expanding its UK engineering footprint at the same moment it is pulling back from direct sales in Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden—suggesting it sees Europe as a long-term technology base even as the near-term commercial model proves difficult to sustain.
• The UK’s position outside EU tariff scope makes it a logical anchor.As Chinese EVs face punitive import duties across the EU, maintaining and upgrading a substantial R&D presence in the UK provides Nio with a foothold that carries less political exposure than equivalent investment on the continent.
