Peterbilt’s Model 567 and 589 equipped with the Paccar TX-18 Pro 18-speed automated transmission are reporting fuel economy gains of 8% to 10% at Patuxent Companies, a Maryland fleet in aggregate, recycling, and construction hauling. The transmission also weighs more than 400 pounds less than units it replaces, adding directly to payload capacity.

Founded in 1987, Patuxent Companies operates sand and gravel plants, recycling operations, and a hauling fleet serving concrete producers, utility contractors, and site development projects across Maryland. The company had operated automatic transmissions in its dump truck fleet for decades and is now replacing ageing vehicles with the Peterbilt Model 567 and 589.

In a statement, Sam Gardiner of Patuxent Companies said: “We’re seeing roughly an 8% to 10% improvement in fuel economy. On average, that’s about a half to one mile per gallon, depending on the driver. In this business, that adds up.”

Developed with Eaton Cummins, the TX-18 Pro offers additional low-end ratios and multiple reverse gears, enabling drivers to adjust speed precisely in demanding operating conditions. The Paccar MX-13 engine completes the powertrain package on both models.

The Patuxent deployment reflects broader vocational trucking trends: changing driver demographics, rising operating costs, and growing demand for solutions that reduce fuel consumption and driver training. Uptime pressures are also driving operator interest in automated transmissions.
