Polestar shifts focus to Europe after US rule denial

Polestar has been denied authorisation under the US Connected Vehicle Rule for sales from model year 2027 and will intensify its strategic focus on Europe, which already accounts for close to 80% of retail volumes. The automaker will continue selling existing Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 stock in the US while expanding its European network and preparing to manufacture future models in the region.

The decision was issued by the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security. In the first quarter of 2026, 94% of Polestar’s retail sales volumes originated from markets outside the US.

Michael Lohscheller, Chief Executive of Polestar, said: “The automotive industry is entering a new phase, based on regional dynamics. Our strategy reflects that, with Europe being our largest growth engine and our plan to manufacture Polestar 7 in Europe. Our record sales in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 show that we are making strong progress, with several new market launches taking place in Europe this year. In addition, we will continue to invest in markets where we have opportunities to continue to grow, like Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Canada.”

Polestar 5 customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in summer 2026, followed by a new Polestar 4 variant in the second half of the year. The all-new Polestar 2 is planned for 2027, with the Polestar 7 compact SUV, to be manufactured in Europe, following thereafter.
