Polyblend, a TotalEnergies subsidiary, has confirmed a €4 million (US$4.6 million) Final Investment Decision (FID) to convert a production line at its Bad Sobernheim facility in Germany for recycled-feedstock compounds. The converted line will produce up to 15 kilotonnes annually by end of 2027, ahead of mandatory content targets expected under the proposed End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulation.

The investment expands an existing production line rather than building new capacity, incorporating mechanically recycled materials into Polyblend’s compound output. The ELV Regulation is expected to introduce mandatory recycled-content targets for new vehicles; the FID pre-positions Bad Sobernheim to meet supplier qualification timelines once the regulation takes effect.

In a statement, Michel Cassart, Site Director of Polyblend, said: “This investment is a tangible demonstration of our ambition to accelerate the development of circular polymers and expand our portfolio of recycled solutions.”

Polyblend operates within TotalEnergies’ polymer business, which targets one million tonnes of circular polymers by 2030. The Bad Sobernheim conversion is framed as part of that programme, extending recycled material integration across Polyblend’s compound portfolio.

Recycled polymer compounds require consistent feedstock quality and supply, which presents distinct procurement challenges compared with virgin material. Mandatory recycled-content regulation converts that procurement challenge from a brand preference into a contractual specification, creating supplier differentiation based on verified capacity rather than intention.
