Uber has launched its first Uber autonomous Zagreb service in Europe, making Croatia the first country where riders can book an autonomous vehicle through the Uber app. From 20 August, riders can access the service in key areas of the Croatian capital, including the city centre, between 07:00 and 21:00, with coverage expanding over time.

The service combines Pony.ai’s autonomous driving technology, Verne’s fleet operations and Uber’s global mobility platform. At launch, a licensed operator monitors from the driver’s seat; fully driverless operations will follow in a later phase, with riders accessing the service through UberX or Comfort.

Verne launched Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb in April 2026 before today’s Uber integration. The Zagreb deployment provides a model the three companies plan to scale to additional European cities.

Pony.ai Founder and Chief Executive James Peng described the Zagreb launch as an example of the joint deployment model. Verne Chief Executive Marko Pejkovic and Uber’s Annie Duvnjak both described Zagreb as an important first step for autonomous mobility in Europe, with the service to expand to additional European cities.

Uber says autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human drivers are expected to coexist for the foreseeable future, with AVs expanding transport options rather than replacing drivers. All vehicles on the platform must meet applicable regulatory requirements and Uber’s safety standards before operating.
