Renesas Electronics has joined the Autoware Foundation at its highest membership tier, making the foundation’s open-source AI driving stack available on R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) platforms for driver assistance and autonomous driving. Software supplied under an Apache 2.0 licence can be commercialised and customised by OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers without restriction.

The arrangement gives automotive suppliers an alternative to both internal stack development and proprietary procurement. Autoware’s software is delivered pre-integrated across Renesas’ R-Car SoC and RoX platforms, with the open-source model allowing suppliers to modify the stack without licensing constraints.

OEMs and Tier-1s can retrain and tune the stack for specific vehicles and use cases. Capability scales from entry-level L2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) to L2++ hands-free autopilot and L4 robotaxi operation.

In a statement, Aish Dubey, Vice President and Head of the High-Performance Computing SoC Division at Renesas Electronics Corporation, said: “The automotive industry is moving beyond individual components toward integrated platforms that combine computing, AI and open software technologies.
