Scania has delivered the first of three plug-in hybrid trucks to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) as part of a joint development project evaluating hybrid technology for military operations. The handover took place at Eurosatory in Paris, with the three trucks to be tested by the Swedish Armed Forces across all service branches.

The vehicles use a plug-in parallel hybrid powertrain combining a combustion engine and electric motor that can operate independently or together. Key military capabilities include silent movement via electric propulsion, an electric range of 70–80 km, and mobile power supply to external equipment such as command posts, sensors and camps.

The battery holds 208 kW/h, providing approximately four hours of continuous alternating current power supply; the combustion engine can recharge it from 0–100% in 45–60 minutes at idle. The electric motor delivers up to 290 kW and 2,800 Nm, with a nominal output of around 200 kW.

In a statement, Stefano Fedel, Head of Scania Commercial, said: “The defence sector is facing changing requirements, where power supply, mobility and flexibility are becoming increasingly important. Through this cooperation with FMV, we can develop and evaluate hybrid technology under real conditions, while also demonstrating how Scania’s industrial capability can contribute to future defence solutions.”

He added: “We see clear potential for hybrid solutions in heavy military vehicles. For Scania, this is an important step in the development of future defence solutions.”
