Teradar, a US developer of terahertz sensing technology, has entered a paid technical evaluation with a major German automaker, assessing its Summit™ sensor for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving use. Testing addresses scenarios where existing sensors fail in fog, moisture, dust and smoke, with results determining whether Teradar enters the automaker’s formal bid process.

The test programme builds on earlier track-testing in Germany, where Summit™ validated its range performance in adverse-weather simulations. At facilities capable of generating replicable fog and rain conditions, the sensor will also be assessed for separability, the ability to distinguish overlapping targets such as a person changing a tyre beside a disabled vehicle.

Current perception solutions, including LiDAR, radar and cameras, have shown unreliable performance in fog, moisture, dust and smoke, conditions that the German automaker requires its sensing stack to handle reliably as it scales ADAS and autonomous driving. The evaluation results will directly inform the OEM’s sensor selection for its next vehicle platform.
