Toyota Industries China TACK plant to close by July 2027
Toyota Industries Corporation has decided to consolidate its two car air-conditioning compressor subsidiaries in China, transferring production from TACK (TD Automotive Compressor Kunshan) in Jiangsu to YST (Yantai Shougang TD Automotive Compressor) in Shandong. Toyota Industries China production consolidation is targeted for completion by July 2027, when TACK will end production and proceed to dissolution.
The reorganisation will consolidate TACK’s production at YST, improving manufacturing efficiency across Toyota Industries’ Chinese compressor operations. YST, established in September 2012 in Yantai, Shandong, has a capital of ¥3.676 billion (approximately US$23.2 million, 50.1% Toyota Industries ownership), while TACK, established in June 2005 in Kunshan, Jiangsu, holds a capital of US$66.29 million (77.6% ownership).
The restructuring is intended to improve production efficiency and enhance the competitiveness of Toyota Industries’ compressor business in China through strengthened technological development and quality assurance systems at YST. TACK is expected to end production in July 2027, after which dissolution procedures will be initiated.
Toyota Industries’ China compressor operations currently serve the car air-conditioning market across domestic and export channels. Consolidating production at YST in Yantai, Shandong forms part of the company’s medium- to long-term growth strategy for its Chinese compressor business.
Why this matters:
- Consolidating into the majority-Japanese-owned entity, not the majority-Toyota one, is a notable choice.Shifting production to YST, where Toyota Industries holds just over 50% ownership, rather than expanding TACK’s operations where it holds 77.6%, suggests the decision was driven by site efficiency and location factors rather than a preference for tighter corporate control.
- A parts supplier scaling back Chinese capacity reflects broader pressure facing Japanese automakers there. As Japanese vehicle brands lose domestic market share to Chinese EV makers, their supply chain partners face the same underlying volume pressure, and this consolidation suggests Toyota Industries sees excess compressor capacity as no longer justified given softening demand from its automotive customers.
