US-Mexico tariff push fails to slow Chinese car sales

On 1 January 2026, Mexico imposed 50% import tariffs on Chinese (and other Asian) vehicle imports, up from previous rate of 20%. This was done after 'encouragement' from the US government, which is opposed not just to Chinese automakers setting up shop domestically but also to growing their presence anywhere in North America.
