Volvo Trucks unveils extended-range electric truck at IAA

Volvo Trucks is presenting an extended-range FH Aero Electric with up to 700 km of range, a revised D13 engine, and a hydrogen combustion truck at IAA 2026 in Hanover. The show marks the OEM’s second successive year as Europe’s heavy-truck market leader, with its battery-electric fleet now past 450 million km driven.

Eight trucks will be on show at Hall 11, with seven more available for test drives from the stand, including two extended-range FH Aero Electric models and a hydrogen combustion engine test truck earmarked for launch before 2030. “With the test-driving track right by our stand, we want to show our new trucks and drivelines at their best – on the road!” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

The display also covers Volvo’s business offering, including service contracts, digital uptime tools, and access to more than 2,500 certified workshops, as well as decarbonisation support across charging infrastructure and mixed-fleet management. The FH Aero, with more than 70,000 sold, anchors the lineup, and all seven Volvo trucks assessed by Euro NCAP have received the maximum five-star safety rating.

In a statement, Alm added: “We’re very proud and excited to have so much to show our customers and the transport industry. It’s the result of serious investment and our commitment to empowering drivers, customers, and their businesses – not just now but in the future. We’re looking forward to meeting up with all our partners. It’s going to be a great event.”

Why this matters:

  • 700 km on a single charge moves electric long-haul trucking closer to diesel parity on range alone. The figure still falls short of what a diesel tractor can cover between fuel stops, but combined with mandatory rest break charging it narrows the operational gap to a point where route planning rather than range anxiety becomes the relevant variable for fleet operators considering electrification.
  • Hydrogen combustion appearing alongside battery-electric on the same test-drive track signals Volvo is keeping multiple powertrain bets live.Offering customers a hands-on comparison before the hydrogen truck even launches commercially reflects genuine uncertainty about which technology will prove more viable for the heaviest long-haul duty cycles.
