Xpeng launches Iron robot production line, 2026 launch
Xpeng commissioned a production line for its Iron humanoid robot on 8 September, with more than 80% of core manufacturing processes automated and a demonstration robot capable of walking off assembly. The automaker described the facility as the world’s first automated production line for advanced humanoid robots, although mass production itself is not expected to begin until the end of this year.
Iron carries 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand, wrapped in a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure designed to balance a human-like appearance with safety. It runs on three of Xpeng’s in-house Turing AI chips—also used in its GX robotaxi and consumer SUV—delivering up to 2,250 TOPS of combined computing power. That configuration lets Xpeng’s physical AI foundation model run directly on the robot rather than through remote operation. The company touts this distinction, saying it reduces latency and avoids the kind of human teleoperation some rival demonstrations, without naming names, have relied on.
In a statement, Chairman and Chief Executive He Xiaopeng noted that “the robot production lines were created from scratch with no precedent to follow,” and the company intends to pursue faster production cycles and greater manufacturing scale from here onwards. Initial units will be deployed inside Xpeng’s own stores and campuses before an official commercial launch. Deliveries in China will soon follow, with overseas market launches planned for 2027.
Xpeng also expects that the high technical barriers and limited supply of high-quality components in advanced humanoid robotics to support gross margins per unit above what it earns on its electric vehicle (EV) business. However, it should be noted that Xpeng has yet to ship a robot to a paying customer, nor has it given any specific financial forecast about their performance.

Xpeng’s humanoid robot, Iron
Still, the robotics unit has already attracted significant outside capital. Xpeng’s Dogotix subsidiary signed share purchase agreements worth roughly US$900m in late August, led by IDG Capital with Gaorong Ventures, Alibaba and Tencent joining as strategic investors, implying a post-money valuation of about US$6.3bn. This appears to be the largest single private funding round in China’s embodied AI sector to date; Xpeng will retain control and continue consolidating the unit’s financial results.
The launch lands as Tesla’s own Optimus programme continues to slip back. Chief Executive Elon Musk once predicted that Tesla would build roughly 10,000 Optimus units in 2026, later admitting in January that the robots remained incapable of doing useful work. Production was originally expected to take place at Fremont around now, but it has instead been pushed to “the coming months”, with commercial sales targeted for H2 2027.
The other major automotive player in the humanoid robot race is Hyundai with its Atlas robot, developed by the now-wholly-owned Boston Dynamics. Atlas prioritises raw industrial capability, including a sustained 50 kg lift and 360-degree joint rotation, and is being deployed cautiously in structured back-of-house factory tasks, starting at Hyundai’s Georgia plant in 2028. Xpeng’s Iron instead leans toward dexterity and human-like safety for more public-facing roles, such as retail and showroom assistance, reflecting Xpeng’s own more consumer-oriented starting point.
A single robot walking off an assembly line can be accepted as a noteworthy milestone, but it is not mass production. Until Xpeng ships a robot to a paying customer and proves it holds up outside a demonstration setting, the company’s claim that Iron will carry meaningfully higher margins than its EVs remains exactly that: a claim.
