ZF’s TraXon 2 with Intarder

ZF has supplied its TraXon 2 automated manual transmission with integrated Intarder to Hino for the truckmaker’s new S’elega touring coach in Japan, the first Hino application of the system. The German supplier also provides braking, suspension and driver assistance components for the vehicle, carrying a truck relationship into coaches.

The 12-speed unit uses a ZF-developed electronic control unit and shift actuators. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions fall by up to 1.7% against the previous TraXon generation, on ZF estimates that vary by application and conditions.

Built into the transmission, the Intarder is a hydrodynamic retarder giving auxiliary braking that works independently of engine speed on long descents. ZF says it can cut service brake use by as much as 90%, lengthening service intervals and reducing brake dust.

The coach also carries ZF electronic braking, continuous damping control and OptiRide air suspension, with short-range radar sensors supporting blind spot and front cross traffic functions. Through J-Bus, the Hino and Isuzu joint venture, the same technologies reach the Isuzu Gala, doubling the platform reach.
