Blue Bird to design next-generation chassis with Ford

Blue Bird Corporation has entered a definitive agreement with Ford Motor Company to design, manufacture and sell the next generation of F-53/F-59 commercial stripped chassis, paired with Ford powertrains, starting in 2028. Blue Bird will also acquire the Detroit Assembly Plant assets of Detroit Chassis LLC, the long-time manufacturer of the platforms, to accelerate the launch.

The agreement expands Blue Bird’s commercial vehicle presence beyond its core business of low- and zero-emission school buses, with new production targeted for early 2028. Blue Bird and Ford said they were committed to a seamless transition for customers, fleets and dealers, with service and support continuing through select dealers across the vehicle lifecycle.

Blue Bird said the stripped chassis market, which supplies platforms used in box trucks and motorhomes, represents a significant long-term growth opportunity. The company expects the collaboration to diversify its product portfolio and broaden its addressable market beyond school buses.

In a statement, John Wyskiel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Bird Corporation, said: “Ford has built an exceptional history in the commercial stripped chassis market, and we are honoured to build on that foundation through our expanded collaboration.” Michael J. Guthrie, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Detroit Chassis, added that the deal would build on the plant’s legacy and support growth for its employees.
