BYD closes the export gap with Chery, hits BEV sales record

BYD sold 440,293 new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in August, marking a 17.8% year-over-year increase and its highest monthly total for 2026, driven by the growing dominance of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in its product mix. BEVs reached a record 256,230 units, the first time BYD has sold more than a quarter of a million BEVs in a single month, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) stayed essentially flat at 177,154 units, pushing BEVs to 59.1% of passenger NEV sales against 53.7% a year prior.

Overseas markets continue to serve as an ever-growing cushion for BYD’s domestic weakness. Exports rose 134.45% YoY to a record 189,466 units, comfortably outpacing the company’s overall 17.84% growth rate, while domestic sales fell 14.3% to 250,827. Having surpassed the one million mark with four months left on the clock, BYD apparently undershot its overseas sales forecast for 2026, which it raised to 1.5 million units in March. At the time of writing, a number in the 1.6-1.7 million range appears more likely.

BYD’s broader sales target of 5.0-5.5 million units, however, appears increasingly out of reach. The automaker sold 2.67 million NEVs through August, down 6.84% YoY, a marked improvement from the 15.7% decline recorded at the half-year mark, but domestic sales for the period remain down 32.72%. BYD has still not revised its full-year target despite that gap, and there are no signs of a meaningful reversal in China’s automotive market over the immediate future.

BYD’s export volumes are now closing in on Chery, the company which has led Chinese automotive shipments for decades and in August became the first Chinese automaker to surpass seven million cumulative exports. BYD exported 188,700-189,500 vehicles in August against Chery’s 196,984, a gap narrow enough to suggest that a reshuffling of China’s export hierarchy may be unfolding. Both automakers are rapidly building their presence in European and Latin American markets; it remains to be seen which will ultimately lead.

The same export surge is playing out across the wider industry. Geely’s exports rose 205% YoY to 110,000 units in August; Chery Group’s total sales grew 15.4% to 280,100, with exports up 52.1%; and Leapmotor delivered more than 100,000 units for a second consecutive month, up 80.7% on the strength of new model launches and its entry to Argentina.

Performance diverged more sharply among China’s smaller NEV makers. Li Auto rebounded to 37,700 units, up 32.1% YoY and 23.7% from July, after completing a delayed transition to its new-generation L-series models. Meanwhile, Huawei-backed HIMA posted its first year-on-year decline, falling 5.6% to 42,101 units. Xiaomi held at more than 30,000 units for a fifth consecutive month, but it must hit around 80,000 deliveries a month for the rest of the year to attain its 550,000-unit target, a considerably steeper trajectory than Leapmotor’s climb to one million.

BYD’s silence on revising its own full-year target, even as the shape of its recovery becomes clearer month by month, leaves investors choosing between two readings. BYD is either unreasonably confident in a massive final quarter or reluctant to concede that five million units was never realistic following China’s domestic downturn.
