GWM has introduced the Cannon Alpha diesel and Tank 500 in Australia and New Zealand, powered by an all-new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel delivering 170kW and 620Nm of torque with fuel consumption of 7.3L/100km and 7.1L/100km respectively. Both models will be priced below comparable rivals and carry a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, with dealer arrival from mid-September 2026.

Peak torque arrives from 1,400rpm across a 1,000rpm band, transferred through a nine-speed automatic and four-wheel-drive system. A Bosch common-rail injection system and improved thermal management deliver the efficiency gains; neither model requires AdBlue.

More than six months of Australian validation, led by Lead Product Dynamics and Integration Manager Rob Trubiani, has covered more than 35,000 test kilometres across the Flinders Ranges, Victoria’s High Country and the Big Desert. Chief Operating Officer John Kett said GWM would continue to invest in diesel despite rival Chinese automakers increasingly pursuing electrification.

Tank 500’s braked towing rises from 3,000kg to 3,500kg to match the Cannon Alpha; both models gain front, centre and rear differential locks and towing-specific transmission calibration. The Tank 500 Vanta adds a 131-litre fuel tank, up from 78 litres.

The cabin gains Coffee OS and a 14.6-inch touchscreen—up from 12.3 inches—with over-the-air updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Pre-orders are open, with more than 1,000 expressions of interest received.
