LG Energy Solution has started production at a new 226-acre battery plant in Lansing, Michigan, targeting more than 35 GWh of annual capacity at full scale. The LG Energy Solution Lansing facility will produce lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells for Toyota electric vehicles.

The plant has absorbed more than US$2 billion of investment since 2022 and currently employs around 900 people, with full-capacity employment expected to reach 1,700. With the Lansing opening, LG Energy Solution now operates two Michigan facilities alongside its Holland site.

LFP cells from the plant will be integrated into utility and grid-scale energy storage systems by LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s US energy storage division. Detroit-based DTE Energy is among the utilities contracted to use Lansing-made batteries in future energy storage projects.

NMC cells will power the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. By year-end 2026, LG Energy Solution expects more than 50 GWh of LFP capacity across five North American sites, representing 80% of its global energy storage system (ESS) capacity.

Chief Executive David Kim said the plant reinforced LG Energy Solution’s commitment to US manufacturing and support for America’s energy infrastructure. Total Michigan investment since 2010 exceeds US$5 billion, with the Michigan workforce exceeding 3,300 by year-end 2026.
