Nissan picks independent director Koji as board chair

Nissan has appointed Akiyoshi Koji as chair of its board of directors at a meeting held in Yokohama on 23 June 2026 following the automaker’s annual general meeting of shareholders (AGSM), at which 11 directors were elected. Koji, a newly joined outside independent director, takes the chair alongside two further new independent board appointments, Junichi Shinbo and Joy M. Greenway.

Ivan Espinosa is re-appointed to his combined role of director, representative executive officer, and president and chief executive. Eiichi Akashi is re-appointed as director, executive officer and Chief Technology Officer, both retaining positions held before the AGSM.

Of the 11 directors elected at the AGSM, seven are designated outside independent directors, giving independent voices a majority on the board. Four of that group, Bernard Delmas, Andrew House, Brenda Harvey and Mariko Tokuno, are continuing members re-appointed at the meeting. Valerie Landon and Timothy Ryan are also re-appointed as non-independent directors.

All three board committees are chaired by outside independent directors. Andrew House leads the five-member nomination committee, Mariko Tokuno the five-member compensation committee and Bernard Delmas the five-member audit committee, with all three also serving on at least one additional committee.
