Thirty emerging technology fields are expected to grow from a EUR 2.5 trillion market today to exceed EUR 20 trillion by 2040, accounting for over a third of global industrial output, according to a new Roland Berger study. Europe could capture approximately EUR 3 trillion of that total, around 20%, if industry and policymakers adopt the right strategic approach.

Among the 30 fields identified, Roland Berger singles out 14 as most relevant for industry, with combined market potential reaching approximately EUR 16 trillion by 2040. These include charging infrastructure, humanoid robotics and autonomous defence, which are identified as areas where Europe’s domestic demand provides a strong competitive foundation.

The study outlines three routes for Europe: pursuing global leadership in areas of existing strength such as quantum technologies; building domestic market positions in charging infrastructure and humanoid robotics; and attracting foreign technology providers where the gap to global leaders is too wide. The study describes Europe’s existing policy instruments, including the AI Act and the European Chips Act, as having fallen short of expectations.
