Stellantis and UQI Robotics explore Box-on-Wheels concept

Stellantis Pro One has announced a collaboration with UQI Robotics to explore autonomous last-mile delivery solutions, centred on a concept called Box-on-Wheels that will make its public debut at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover on 14 September. European markets will be the initial focus, with expansion into other territories assessed as the project advances.

UQI Robotics, a joint venture between Ubtech and Miracle Automation established in 2020, brings autonomous systems, perception software and artificial intelligence capabilities to the partnership, drawing on Miracle Automation’s industrial and energy systems experience. Since its establishment, the firm has accumulated contract value exceeding €260m (approximately US$280m) and deployed over 7,000 robots in 66 cities globally.

Under the collaboration, Stellantis Pro One will tailor the Box-on-Wheels concept for European conditions, developing the services, connectivity and fleet integration framework that logistics operators require. Initial European trials are expected to assess operational performance and scalability before any broader expansion is considered.

Box-on-Wheels is designed to function as an integrated logistics platform—combining autonomous driving, electrification and connectivity—rather than a standalone transport asset. The initiative connects to Stellantis’ FaSTLAne 2030 strategy and reflects a wider shift in commercial vehicle development towards managed, operator-centred delivery systems.

“Professional customers are increasingly looking for solutions that go beyond the vehicle itself” said Eric Laforge, Global Senior Vice President at Stellantis Pro One, in a statement. “Through this collaboration with UQI Robotics, we are exploring how autonomous technologies, connectivity and services could contribute to the future of commercial mobility. While autonomous urban commercial vehicles are already becoming a reality in China, this collaboration allows us to evaluate how such technologies could be adapted to other markets and customer needs.”

Why this matters:

  • Stellantis is importing Chinese autonomy expertise directly.Laforge’s acknowledgment that autonomous urban commercial vehicles are “already becoming a reality in China” suggests Stellantis views UQI’s existing deployment experience as a faster route to market than developing comparable capability internally.
  • A “proof of concept” framing manages expectations early.Describing Box-on-Wheels as exploratory rather than committing to a launch timeline suggests Stellantis wants room to walk away if European validation doesn’t translate as smoothly as UQI’s roughly 7,000 robots deployed across 66 cities elsewhere.
  • Redefining the vehicle as a logistics platform could reshape supplier relationships.Positioning Box-on-Wheels as an integrated service rather than a standalone product suggests Stellantis Pro One may be trying to capture recurring revenue from fleet integration and connectivity, not just the vehicle sale itself.
